Traffic moved steadily along a busy stretch of road in Mount Clemens, Michigan, when something unusual caught people’s attention. A silver pickup truck was drifting slowly through traffic, moving at only a few miles per hour and failing to respond to signals from nearby drivers.
Inside the vehicle, the driver appeared confused and unable to react normally.
Moments later, two sheriff’s deputies pulled up alongside the truck with their lights flashing. What followed was a rescue that quickly drew attention across the country.
Body-camera and traffic footage later revealed a dramatic moment: a deputy climbing from a moving patrol car into the moving truck itself.
The unusual maneuver likely prevented a dangerous crash.
Reports of an Erratic Vehicle
Authorities said the incident began on September 12, 2024, when deputies with the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office received reports about a pickup truck driving erratically along southbound Gratiot Avenue.
Witnesses told dispatchers the vehicle was moving slowly and weaving across the roadway, creating concern for other drivers nearby.
Deputies Nicole Miron and Anthony Gross were sent to locate the vehicle.
When they found the truck, they activated their lights and sirens and attempted to pull the driver over. But the truck continued forward at roughly 5 miles per hour, and the driver appeared unable to respond to instructions.
According to investigators, the man behind the wheel looked disoriented, as if he were experiencing some kind of medical issue.
A Split-Second Decision
With traffic increasing and the truck approaching a busy intersection, deputies realized the situation could quickly become dangerous.
Deputy Gross maneuvered the patrol vehicle alongside the truck while Deputy Miron attempted to get the driver’s attention through the open window.
At one point, the driver briefly tapped his brakes and rolled down the window slightly.
That moment gave Miron the opportunity she needed.
From the passenger seat of the patrol vehicle, she climbed out through the window and carefully moved into the passenger side of the moving truck.
Once inside, she spoke to the driver and managed to bring the vehicle to a stop.
Preventing a Potential Crash
Authorities later said the driver, a 63-year-old man, appeared to be experiencing a medical emergency while driving.
Because the truck was still moving down the road, even at a slow speed, it posed a serious risk to other motorists.
Deputy Miron’s decision to enter the truck allowed her to take control of the situation before the vehicle reached a crowded intersection.
Emergency crews from the Clinton Township Fire Department arrived shortly afterward and began treating the driver at the scene before transporting him to a hospital.
Officials later said the driver was able to receive medical care after the rescue.
Footage Shows the Dramatic Rescue
Video released by the sheriff’s office shows the tense moments as the patrol car pulls up beside the truck.
In the footage, Miron can be seen leaning out of the police vehicle and climbing through the open window of the pickup truck while both vehicles are still moving.
Inside the truck, she checks on the driver and quickly works to bring the vehicle to a stop.
The rescue happened within seconds but required precise timing and coordination between both deputies.
Their actions drew praise from local officials and law enforcement leaders.
Praise From Law Enforcement
Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham later commended the deputies for their quick thinking and willingness to take risks to protect others on the road.
According to the sheriff, their actions likely prevented a far more serious situation.
By stopping the truck safely, they were able to protect both the driver and the surrounding traffic.
A Reminder of How Quickly Emergencies Can Happen
Medical emergencies behind the wheel are rare but dangerous situations.
When a driver becomes incapacitated, even a slowly moving vehicle can create serious risks for pedestrians and other drivers.
Incidents like this highlight the importance of quick decisions during emergency responses.
In this case, the deputies’ ability to assess the situation and act within seconds helped bring a potentially dangerous situation under control.
For drivers passing along Gratiot Avenue that afternoon, the moment may have seemed chaotic.
But for the man behind the wheel, and for the motorists around him, the outcome could have been far worse.
Instead, the situation ended with a safe stop — thanks to a rescue that required both courage and quick thinking.
