FBI Publishes Key Footage and Images in Ongoing Nancy Guthrie Investigation

Federal and local law enforcement agencies have taken significant steps in the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, who disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona home on January 31, 2026. The release of new visual evidence by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has drawn intense public attention and brought fresh — though still incomplete — insights into what investigators believe occurred.

New Surveillance Video and Photos Released

In the biggest public update in weeks, the FBI published surveillance photos and video footage showing a masked individual outside Guthrie’s home around the time she vanished. Images depict the person tampering with a doorbell camera and carrying what appears to be a backpack and possibly a firearm holster. Officials described the individual as a man of average build and height (approximately 5’9″–5’10″).

This footage was recovered after investigators worked to retrieve residual data from security systems that initially appeared inaccessible. FBI Director Kash Patel shared the visuals on social media platform X, urging anyone who recognizes the person to contact law enforcement.

These are the first confirmed visual leads released to the public showing a possible subject connected to Guthrie’s disappearance.

What Else Law Enforcement Has Revealed

While the suspect in the footage has not been arrested or positively identified, several key developments have unfolded:

A glove with unidentified male DNA was found near Guthrie’s residence and submitted for forensic analysis — a compelling lead that aligns with what’s seen in the released images.  Investigators have identified a distinctive backpack seen in the footage — a black Ozark Trail Hiker Pack sold at specific retail outlets — and are working with vendors to trace purchase or surveillance details that could narrow a suspect pool.  At least one individual was detained and questioned in the early days of the investigation but was later released after coordination between local and federal authorities found no evidence connecting them to the crime.  Sheriff Chris Nanos cleared Guthrie’s family members of any involvement in her disappearance, underscoring that the case is being investigated as an abduction rather than a domestic incident.

These findings are part of a multi-agency effort, led locally by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in partnership with the FBI and other federal units.

Search Still Active, Motive Unknown

Detectives have not yet determined a motive for Guthrie’s disappearance, and authorities remain cautious about early theories ranging from ransom to revenge. The sheriff has publicly stated that there is currently no confirmed motive, and investigations into various leads — including neighborhood canvassing and digital evidence analysis — continue.

At least two ransom notes demanding cryptocurrency have been reported to have circulated, but authorities have not confirmed their legitimacy or direct link to the main investigation.

Family Appeals and Public Engagement

Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have repeatedly appealed for public help, sharing emotional messages on social media urging anyone with information to come forward. These appeals have helped generate tens of thousands of tips, according to law enforcement sources.

The case has drawn nationwide interest not only because of Guthrie’s public profile but also due to the unsettling uncertainty surrounding her whereabouts and welfare. Law enforcement has emphasized the urgency of the investigation, noting Guthrie’s age and medical needs — particularly her reliance on important medications.

What the Evidence So Far Suggests

While authorities are careful not to speculate publicly, the combination of:

surveillance footage of a masked individual, forensic evidence including DNA outside the home, and the lack of evidence suggesting voluntary disappearance

has reinforced the abduction theory as the leading scenario.

No arrests have been made, and the search remains active with a reward offered for information that can help resolve the case.

As developments continue, official updates from the FBI, Pima County Sheriff’s Department, and family statements remain the most reliable sources of new information. Authorities encourage anyone with knowledge related to the case to immediately contact law enforcement with tips.
