A community in shock
A quiet neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan, was left reeling after a 14-year-old boy allegedly beat his 73-year-old grandmother to death, leaving family and neighbors struggling to understand the tragedy.
Police say the boy, whose name is withheld due to his age, attacked Evelyn Thompson inside her home on Wednesday afternoon. Officers were called after neighbors reported hearing screams.
“I’ve lived here for 20 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said neighbor Janice Morgan. “She was such a sweet lady — everyone loved her.”
The horrific details
Authorities say Thompson suffered severe head trauma and multiple contusions. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Police report that the incident followed a domestic dispute, though investigators are still working to determine what triggered the violent attack.
“This appears to be a shocking and unprovoked act of violence by a juvenile,” said Detective Mark Reynolds. “We are still gathering information on the circumstances.”
Family devastated
Thompson’s family described her as a devoted grandmother who spent her days caring for her grandchildren and volunteering in her church.
“She had a heart of gold,” said her granddaughter, Tanya Wilson. “I don’t understand how someone so young could do this. It’s unimaginable.”
They also expressed concern for the boy, emphasizing that while the act was horrific, he is still a child who may need counseling and intervention.
Legal proceedings
The 14-year-old was taken into custody and is now being held at a juvenile detention center. He faces charges of homicide and aggravated assault, though prosecutors may seek to try him as an adult due to the severity of the crime.
“This is a tragic case that highlights the challenges of juvenile crime and accountability,” said Juvenile Court spokesperson Linda Harris.
Community response
Local residents held a candlelight vigil for Thompson on Thursday evening, leaving flowers and notes outside her home.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said neighbor Kevin Brooks. “She didn’t deserve this. No one does.”
Police continue to urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward, and counselors have been made available to community members affected by the tragedy.
“Our hearts go out to the family,” Detective Reynolds added. “We will ensure justice is pursued while also addressing the needs of the young suspect.”
