Teenage rage turns deadly
A shocking case out of Houston, Texas, has left neighbors and authorities stunned: a 15-year-old boy allegedly strangled his mother twice in her own home after she refused to buy him a new iPhone.
According to police, the teen, whose name has not been released due to his age, attacked his 42-year-old mother, Sharon Mitchell, in her kitchen on Monday evening.
“She said no to another phone upgrade, and that’s when he just snapped,” said Officer Ryan Kim of the Houston Police Department. “This wasn’t a one-time impulse — he strangled her twice before neighbors intervened.”
A terrifying struggle
Neighbors reported hearing screaming and banging inside the Mitchell home. One eyewitness, Lisa Gomez, told reporters:
“I heard her screaming ‘Help me!’ Then I saw him pushing her into the wall. I called 911 immediately.”
Police say the mother suffered bruising and minor injuries but survived the attack. Paramedics treated her at the scene before she was taken to Houston Methodist Hospital for observation.
The teen’s disturbing motive
According to court documents, the teenager was frustrated over his mother refusing to purchase him the latest iPhone model. Investigators also revealed previous incidents of aggressive behavior, including property damage and threats toward family members.
“It’s shocking that a disagreement over a phone escalated to this level,” said child psychologist Dr. Emily Rhodes. “It highlights a dangerous lack of impulse control and underlying behavioral issues that need immediate attention.”
Arrest and charges
The teen was taken into custody and faces charges of aggravated assault of a family member. Juvenile authorities say he may be held in a secure youth facility pending further hearings.
Police emphasized that while juvenile offenders are often given opportunities for rehabilitation, the severity of this case makes intervention critical.
“This was an extreme act of violence in a domestic setting,” Officer Kim said. “It could have ended in tragedy, and the community needs to understand how serious such behavior can be.”
Community reaction
Neighbors expressed shock and concern for the family.
“I’ve known this mom for years — she’s kind and loving,” said Nancy Tran. “I can’t believe her own son would do something like this over a phone.”
Authorities are also working with local social services to ensure the mother receives counseling and support while the case moves through the juvenile justice system.
“No family should have to live in fear of this kind of violence,” Officer Kim added.
